BRITA Professional ‘Grounds of Innovation’ Awards crown the UK’s top 10 most innovative independent cafés
The 2026 Grounds of Innovation award winners showcase how independent cafés across the UK are finding new ways to innovate through coffee, sustainability and community. Taking the top spot is Camphill Café in Milton Keynes, which impressed the judges with its approach to creating meaningful work and training opportunities for adults with a range of abilities.
The vegetarian café works closely with its artisan bakery, garden and land-craft workshops, supporting a wider mission to help people reach their full potential while creating a welcoming space for the local community.
This year’s awards come at a critical time for the hospitality industry, with nearly 100,000 jobs lost across the sector over the past two years as businesses contend with mounting costs and pressure on margins. Against that backdrop, The Grounds of Innovation Awards shines a light on the independent cafés continuing to invest, adapt and find new ways to bring value to their customers and communities.
Now in its fourth year, the awards celebrate independent cafés pushing the sector forward in different ways, from how they serve coffee and shape their menus to the experiences they create and the role they play in their communities.

With 60 years of water filtration expertise, BRITA Professional supports coffee businesses across the UK in achieving consistent water quality while helping to protect the equipment they depend on.
The top three cafés – Camphill Café, Fringe & Ginge and Eat ‘n’ Mess – will each receive a PURITY C iQ system from BRITA Professional. Its iQ technology uses data to enable more precise filtration management and minimise scale build-up – an important consideration when just 1mm of limescale can increase energy consumption by around 7%.
As the overall winner, Camphill Café will also receive a prize package worth more than £1,000 to help build on its success. This includes a bespoke latte art masterclass with Ben Lewis, also known as Barista Benji, the 2025 UK Latte Art Champion, a sensory session with a BRITA water sommelier and installation of the PURITY C iQ system.
Samantha Scoles, Sales Director at BRITA Professional and qualified water sommelier, said: “Each year the entries tell us something new about where independent coffee is heading, and this year’s top 10 show that innovation doesn’t have to be big or flashy. Camphill Café has built supported work experience for adults with a range of abilities into the way it operates. Fringe & Ginge adapts its water to bring out the best in each coffee it brews, while Hub & Spoke’s support for a local child’s music lessons is a great example of the role a café can play beyond its four walls.
“That’s what Grounds of Innovation is there to recognise: the thoughtful ideas that can make a difference to the people working in a café, the coffee being served and the customers coming through the door. ‘Drink better. Do better.’ is central to how we think at BRITA Professional, and this year’s top 10 bring that idea to life in ten very different ways.”
Julia Funge, Camphill Café, said: “Our Café is a welcoming community space where people are encouraged to slow down and enjoy quality food, coffee, art and conversation. Our ambition from the outset was to create an exceptional café experience within a charitable setting, demonstrating that social impact and commercial quality can go hand in hand. The enthusiastic support of our customers is the strongest affirmation of that vision.
“This award belongs to every member of our café team. Camphill Café was created to prove that exceptional hospitality and meaningful social impact can thrive together. Winning Grounds of Innovation is wonderful recognition of the hard work, talent and commitment that our team brings to the café every day.”
