BRITA Professional ‘Grounds of Innovation’ reveals the UK’s top 20 most innovative independent cafés
BRITA Professional has unveiled the top 20 cafés shortlisted for Grounds of Innovation 2026, its annual competition celebrating creativity and innovation across the UK’s independent café scene.

Supporting the UK’s independent coffee sector
With more than 50 years’ expertise in water filtration, BRITA Professional works with cafés and coffee businesses nationwide, helping them achieve consistent water quality for great-tasting coffee while protecting the equipment they rely on.
Central to this is BRITA Professional’s iQ technology, which powers intelligent filtration solutions such as PURITY C iQ. By using data to monitor water quality and filter performance, it helps cafés maintain consistency, protect their equipment and keep operations running efficiently.
Samantha Scoles, Sales Director at BRITA Professional and qualified water sommelier, commented: “Independent cafés are at the heart of Britain’s coffee culture, and this shortlist shows how they’re finding new and innovative ways to evolve. We’ve seen one café roasting its own coffee on-site and offering a refill service for customers, another providing supported, on-the-job training for adults with a range of abilities, and an old bus depot transformed into a café with its own biodiversity garden.
“Grounds of Innovation is about championing businesses that are redefining how they serve coffee, run their shops and the role they play in their communities. At BRITA Professional, we share that drive to innovate, developing filtration technology that helps operators get the best from their water, deliver consistently great-tasting coffee and protect the equipment they rely on. Together, it’s about continuing to raise standards and rethink what a great café can be.”
Ruby from Habit Coffee Company said: “We are so proud and grateful to have been nominated for the BRITA ‘Grounds of Innovation’ award. As two young sisters who have only been trading for five months, this opportunity is massive for us, and we would like to thank BRITA for the recognition.”
Sue and Rob from The Hub & Spoke Café said: “The Hub & Spoke has always been about far more than coffee and food. We see ourselves as the living room of the village – a place where people meet, connect, catch up, celebrate, ask for help, or simply come in because they know they’ll be welcomed.”
